SOUTH HAMILTON, MA - Richy and Mickey Werenski of South Hadley, MA, have both qualified for the 102nd Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship, the oldest tournament conducted by the Massachusetts Golf Association. The event is being held July 12-16 at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, MA and will consist of both stroke and match play rounds of golf.
Richy Werenski, a freshman on the men’s golf team at Georgia Tech University, is coming off a great result at the 2010 Player’s Amateur, where is placed 4th among some of the top collegiate and amateur golfers from around the world. Richy attended Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (Hank Haney IJGA) for two years before enrolling at Georgia Tech in January of this year.
Mickey Werenski, a rising sophomore at Hank Haney IJGA located on Hilton Head Island, SC, fired rounds of 73 and 74 in qualifying for the Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship earlier this week. He edged out Richy, who shot rounds of 74 and 74, but they qualified comfortably for the event.
Sitting on opposite sides of the bracket, Richy and Mickey could potentially face each other in the 36-hole championship match. Among the 144 players who qualified for the Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship, Richy and Mickey were the only brothers to do so. At age 16, Mickey is the youngest player in the field.
