When current IJGA senior Lee Hammerschmidt of Armonk, N.Y., was interviewed by the Armonk Daily Voice two years ago, he said he had two golf-related goals: to play for a Division I program and to win a tournament in South Carolina. He can now cross the former off his list as he has committed to play golf for the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks.
A charter member of the NCAA Division I Patriot League, Lehigh competes against schools such as American University, Boston University and the U.S. Naval Academy. The Lehigh men’s golf team finished third in the Patriot League Championship last season.
Once a high school quarterback, Hammerschmidt traded his football cleats for golf shoes when he decided to attend the IJGA last fall to focus on his golf game. At the IJGA, Hammerschmidt balances rigorous academics at Heritage Academywith daily golf training.
The 18-year-old began playing golf six years ago and has been playing in tournaments since he was 14.
Hammerschmidt has taken advantage of the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT)’s full tournament schedule, playing in 14 events in the 2013-2014 season. Hammerschmidt has increased his experience by competing on some of the best courses in the country including the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Harbour Town Golf Links and THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.
He has competed in four events so far this season including a top 10 finish in the IJGT Junior at Colleton River in September.
Congratulations to Hammerschmidt and his entire support system as he embarks on his journey into college golf!
