IJGA alumnus, Richy Werenski of South Hadley, Mass., finished in a tie for 43rd place at the final stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School earning him playing status in the first eight events on Web.com Tour schedule. Since graduating from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014, Werenski has been training in Bluffton, S.C., the hometown of the IJGA.
The grueling process of qualifying for the Web.com Tour started in Johns Creek,, Ga., at The Standard Club. He recorded rounds of 65-68-68-68 to advance to second stage which was held at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Fla. There, Werenski recorded rounds of 70-69-71-69 to advance to the final stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School.
The pressure-packed final stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School was held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. It was a 108-hole marathon with players in the top 45 and ties earning status on the Web.com Tour. Werenski got off to a slow start recording rounds of 76 and 73 on the first two days. He remained patient and carded three consecutive rounds in the 60s (67-65-69) to put himself back in contention going into the final round. Many players entered the final round with a shot at achieving their goal and Werenski was up to the challenge. Fighting off nerves and a challenging golf course, Werenski was able to card a 72 to finish inside the top 45 and earn a solid paycheck of $10,000.
Werenski will look to continue his successful play on the Web.com Tour in hopes of earning his PGA Tour card. Players that finish in the Top 25 of the Web.com Tour money list will earn cards to the PGA Tour.
