In a field of 20 talented female junior golfers, Kelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn., came out victorious at the AJGA Davis Love III Junior Open at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simon Island, Ga., on July 21-24, 2014. The rising senior at the IJGA finished an impressive five strokes ahead of her competition after three rounds, carding scores of 74-67-70–211.
Initially, Whaley trailed at the end of round one after having struggled with a handful of bogeys. Her round two performance featured 13 pars and four birdies, allowing her to shave seven strokes from her round one score. The 3-under-par score of 67 she carded in round two was the lowest round to be achieved by any of the girls in the division.
Whaley then finished strong in the final round where she used a streak of par or better on the front nine to carry her to victory. Composure was the name of the game for Whaley who saw the final round as a mental task to stay calm and focused through all 18 holes.
“I wanted to make sure I didn’t get ahead of myself,” Whaley said. “I think I did a good job of that today. I played a steady round and was able to take home the win.”
Whaley also competes on the IJGT where she has won three of four events she played in this season. Following her final year, she will be taking her talents to Chapel Hill, N.C., where she will position herself on the University of North Carolina’s women’s golf team.
