Founded in 2007, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) offers tournaments for juniors ages 8-18 across the country, including multiple local tournaments in Bluffton and Hilton Head. Many International Junior Golf Academy students incorporate HJGT events into their (carefully crafted) tournament schedules. We spoke with HJGT Director of Marketing Dan Crowther to learn a little bit more about the tour.
IJGA: What can someone who’s never played an HJGT event expect at their first tournament?
HJGT: At their first event a player can expect to receive a welcome package and if they attend IJGA they become a member of the tour at no cost. When they arrive at the registration table they will receive a registration gift and membership items (a set of Lamkin golf grips, a change out of champ spikes, a bag tag, a wedge brush and a full year of Golf Digest). Also, our staff will go over all of the tour policies with them since it is their first event.
What are some of the highlights from the fall season?
Our second annual Academy Cup Invitational, our Thanksgiving weekend Hurricane Cup Invitational on Sea Island and our National Championship at five golf courses in Orlando in December where we had 385 players. We had 570 kids graduate off our tour this year and 179 of them received college golf scholarships at a combination of Division I, II and III schools. Our niche has become a tour for the DII and III schools. We have a college prep series within our schedule where we hold tournaments at just over 20 events at college/university golf courses.
What events are you most looking forward to this spring?
We have introduced our Premier Events series within the schedule with events at super high-end venues with partners around the country. Large fields and history with assisting partners with the running of these events. The first one is in March.
What are the benefits of playing on your tour?
We offer a well-run national tour that is open to players week-in and week-out in 32 states this year with over 250 two- to three-day events. We have reasonable pricing and great membership benefits. Full-time staffing at all 250 events with eight full-time staff members that manage pace of play and provide rules expertise with USGA training. Customer service on and off the course. Live scoring with our phone app and website. And a new College Advisory Board that was just introduced.
Who are some of your most notable alumni?
Anything else you’d like to add?
We intend to give the ladies and gentlemen that compete in junior golf a national platform that provides kids the opportunity to compete at quality venues that are run by quality staff members. More college exposure with the emphasis on DII and DIII schools.
