Students, Pros Represent BGGA All Around the World

Over the last several weeks, Bishops Gate Golf Academy has been represented by players at every level and all over the world. BGGA students recently played in a tournament right down the road in Tampa, Florida, and in the South American Junior Championship in Chile. At the FCWT at Feather Sound Country Club, BGGA student Robin Williams claimed a second-place victory in his division with a tournament total 152. Carlos Marrero claimed low-round honors with a second-round 69, bringing him within 5 shots of the lead for a T6 finish in his division.

In Chile, BGGA students Maria Hoyos and Marcos Montenegro went to represent their respective countries in the South American Junior Championship. Playing for each of their junior national teams, Maria and Marcos helped lead the way to top finishes in each division. With the help of Maria, the Colombian girls team claimed the South American Junior Championship title for the second year in a row. Marcos helped pull the Argentinian boys team to a second-place finish in the Boys Division.

Bishops Gate Golf Academy has had the incredible opportunity to welcome several professionals to our campus. Training under the direction of BGGA’s Director of Golf Kevin Smeltz, several of these professionals have had great successes in the past weeks. A frequent visitor of BGGA’s training facility, Na Yeon Choi finished in sixth place at the JTBC Founders Cup in Phoenix, Arizona this past weekend. Another one of Smeltz’s students who frequently trains at BGGA, Roope Kakko, was one shot out of the lead at the European Tour’s Madeira Open before the tournament was cancelled due to bad weather. Kevin Smeltz’s professional student Diego Velasquez claimed a hometown victory at the 68 Avianca Colombia Open presentado por Arturo Calle, hosted in Bogota, Columbia. Velasquez, who went pro in 2010, won the event by an impressive six strokes with an 18-under  65-69-67-65-266 score. This marked his first win on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

From the Web.com Tour, Hao Tong Li and Jeff Corr have recently established a part-time training base at BGGA’s training facilities.  Two weeks ago, at the Web.com Brazil Champions presented by HSBC, Jeff Corr brought home a T19 finish, and Li brought home a T16 finish at the Web.com Chile Classic last week.
