Taiga Seki Uses Gap Year to Improve Game, Commits to Play Golf at College of the Canyons

While Taigi Seki has only been at Bishops Gate Golf Academy for two semesters, he’s made great strides in getting his game back to where he wants it to be. Seki, a Post Graduate student, came to BGGA after his senior year in high school to improve his game and get help being recruited for college.

Colleges fully recognize the value of students enrolling after a Post Grad experience. Coaches appreciate that athletes from Post Grad are better prepared physical, technically and competitively to excel in college golf. And, Seki’s parents rest assured knowing that the Post Grad experience would help him acclimate to college so much easier. These combined elements lay a strong foundation for ensuring Seki’s long-term collegiate success.

Within a short time, BGGA coaches were able to help Seki with his chipping and pitching.

“My chipping wasn’t good,” said Seki. “My coach changed my chipping because I had the yips,  chucked or topped it in a tournament. I was very nervous but my coach helped me a lot.”

Seki also made improvements in his mental game by learning to do a pre-shot routine and imagining how to hit his shots before making impact with the ball.

He didn’t know much about the college recruiting process when he arrived at BGGA, but Seki learned that attending a junior college was a great route for his goal of eventually playing golf at a Division I school and then turning professional.

“With junior college, I can improve myself and then I can go to a better college after two years,” said Seki.

Seki will be playing golf for College of the Canyons this coming fall.

Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Seki started playing golf at five years old when his dad took him to a driving range close to their home.

“Every time I play golf I can find something to improve myself,” said Seki. “Golf is not about just playing. It’s very close to life.”

With his chipping woes fixed and a college waiting for him in the fall, Seki will leave BGGA on the right track.
