BGGA Weekend Wrap-Up | April 27, 2015

Bishops Gate Golf Academy students were not quite as busy this weekend, but the handful of students who played in tournaments this weekend showed up in force.

At the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Orange Lake Junior Open, BGGA student Robin Williams claimed first place. Robin carded 9 birdies over the two-day tournament, propelling him to a 5-shot, wire-to-wire victory. In the Boys 15-18 Division, Mathias Andersen shot a first-round 1-over-par 72 helping him claim his first top-10 finish of the year.

The AJGA hosted the GGGA Junior Open at The Seagate presented by Sportlink at the Seagate Country Club in Delray Beach, Florida. Coming off of her win at the AJGA Wells Fargo Junior Classic last week, Maria Hoyos fired a 2-under-par 70 to claim the lead after the first round of play. Even though she struggled in the second round, Maria fought her way around the course and closed the weekend with a solo second-place finish.

Maria was featured in the AJGA’s April edition of The Insider as a player to watch in the Polo Golf Rankings. After her win in Georgia, Maria jumped from No. 105 to No. 31.

On the professional level, Hao Tong Li claimed a sixth-place finish at the Volvo China Open. Li started the final round of play in a four-way tie for the lead at 8-under-par, but struggled on the back nine. Li settled for a sixth-place finish and climbed another five spots in the Official World Golf Rankings. Li now sits in the No. 111 spot on the OWGR.

Na Yeon Choi, coached by BGGA Director of Golf Kevin Smeltz, claimed a T11 finish at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic presented by CTBC. Na Yeon carded three sub-par rounds on her way to this weekend’s top-15 finish in Daly City, California.
