BGGA Weekend Wrap-Up | April 20, 2015

After one of the busiest weekends of the year, Bishops Gate Golf Academy was well-represented in tournaments all over the world. BGGA students, alums, and residents claimed 4 wins, 2 runner-up finishes, and several top-20 finishes.

AJGA Wells Fargo Junior Classic presented by Mizuno: If the old adage holds true, The Country Club of the South is going to have a lot of May flowers. The heavy rain at the Wells Fargo Junior Classic presented by Mizuno caused the tournament to be cut down to a one-day, 18-hole event. BGGA Sophomore and University of Florida verbal commit Maria Hoyos fired a 1-under-par back nine to position herself in a tie for first place. In the Boys Division, Marcos Montenegro shot a 2-under-par 70 to claim a solo sixth place finish.

FCWT at World Woods Pine Barrens: In the Boys Division, BGGA students packed the top-10 list. With a tournament total 72-72-144, Robin Williams finished the weekend with a 2-over-par tie for fifth place. BGGA students Carlos Marrero and Tsukasa Kimishima both closed the weekend at 4-over-par 146 to share a tie for eighth place. Ending the weekend tied for 18th place, Mathias Andersen shot a second-round 71, his lowest tournament round to date, to stay in the top-20.

In the Girls Division, Mami Yamamoto claimed her second FCWT win of the season with an incredible 12-shot victory. Mami shot a tournament total 70-72-142.

Florida Junior Tour: At the Florida Junior Tour’s tournament at Viera East Golf Club, BGGA sophomore and University of Georgia verbal commit Gabriela Coello shot a tournament total 73-75-148 to claim a runner-up finish.

HJGT Colombia Major Championship: Through a partnership with the Colombian Junior Golf Association (AJGC), the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the 36-hole Colombia Major Championship in Bogotá, Colombia. In the Boys 15-18 Division, BGGA alum Julián Périco took home a first place finish. Fighting through rough weather conditions, Julián shot a 76-73-149. Périco drained his birdie putt on the 36th hole of the tournament to avoid a playoff and claim his title outright.

Hao Tong Li played in his first European Tour event of the year at the Shenzhen International this past weekend. The regular shot an incredible 7-under-par 65 on Saturday, positioning himself within sight of the lead going into the final day of play. Hao Tong then shot a 5-under-par 67 on Sunday and took the clubhouse lead by two shots. Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat eagled the 17th hole, putting him in a tie for first. After missing his birdie putt on 18, Li and Aphibarnrat back to the 18th tee for the first playoff hole. Hao Tong just missed his birdie putt and claimed a runner-up finish. Li told PGA TOUR China, “I didn’t expect the playoff. But it was still a good week. Congratulations to Kiradech. This is a very good experience for me, and I enjoyed it very much. I’ve never played so high up on the leaderboard of a European Tour event, so I feel lucky.” His finish this week boosted him to the 125th spot in the OWGR, his highest ranking to date. Hao Tong has selected Bishops Gate Golf Academy as his U.S. training base, and has trained here since the beginning of 2015.

Diego Velasquez finsihed tied for ninth at the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica’s 84 Abierto OSDE del Centro presentado por Fiber Corp. Diego fought throughout the entire tournament and entered the final day in fifth place. After a few bad breaks, Diego settled into a T9 finish. Diego is coached by BGGA Director of Golf Kevin Smeltz, and sits at #2 on the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Money List.
